Hello! Has it really been four years since I sent out my last Studio Notes newsletter? HAHA yes, I’m afraid so.
I’ve often thought about reviving this project and have even written drafts in the past. But somehow I felt I couldn’t justify my long absence from this platform…so I didn’t. Long story short, I let my inner critic win. Why? Honestly it was the “pressure” of keeping up the old format on a weekly basis + the 2020 lockdown blues back then. The point is, disappearing on Studio Notes stretched into months, which turned into years. :(
So that’s the real scary thing about fear, isn’t it? That if you’re not careful, that judgmental inner voice can really drain you of vital creative energy. More importantly, it can rob you of time. Which isn’t to say that my time away from publishing writing has been unfruitful—no, not in the least. So much has transpired in my personal life and my professional career in the past four years! But that’s a long story to share for another time.
For today, first let me celebrate winning over my imposter syndrome to deliver you this important message: YOU’RE INVITED (!!!) To my next art exhibit! Opening next weekend at Gallery Genesis, Estancia Mall!
“What Makes You Feel Free” is a Two-Woman Show with my good friend & co-artist, Kara Pangilinan, otherwise known as Details Ink. Here is an excerpt about our work:
In this exhibit, two expressionists explore what it means to create freely and to live freely. What can be made when there are no bounds and no limits? What kind of life would we live if it were only up to us? How can we express who we truly are underneath the layers of personal history, contrasting desires, and societal expectations?
In collaboration with Gallery Genesis, we’ve been preparing for show since early this year. I’ve been both excited and a tiny bit nervous to share my latest artworks for this as they’re quite a departure from what I’ve put out before. Our central theme is about freedom. It’s such a broad topic and can be defined in many ways, so I allowed myself to experiment and embrace the different styles emerging in my art practice.
Interestingly enough, Kara & I have very distinct styles—I’ve always felt at home in vibrant abstract broad strokes, while her style is grounded in intricate black-and-white patterns. But what we do have in common is how we capture emotions expressively through art. Ultimately, I believe this worked in our favor! We’ve created a show that celebrates the contrasting ways we all experience freedom. I’ll share more about my pieces in detail next time, as I want it to be more of a surprise. :)
Our artist reception is on June 29, Saturday at 5PM. The attire is casual Filipiniana, but no pressure—either way, it would be great to see you at Gallery Genesis, Estancia Mall. We’re so excited and hope you can take the time to see the work in person!
Much love,
B
